What Smart Window actually does inside the browser
Smart Window is described by Mistral as an AI browsing assistant, and its core job is to help users make sense of complex searches rather than just returning a list of links. Two capabilities stand out: it can remember information from content the user has already visited, and it can pull information directly from open browser tabs. That combination means the assistant works with the material already in front of the user, rather than starting from a blank query each time. It's a shift from search-as-lookup to search-as-conversation, grounded in whatever the browser session already contains.
Why the data-handling terms matter as much as the feature list
Any assistant that reads across your tabs and remembers earlier content raises an obvious question: where does that information go? Mistral and Mozilla answer part of it directly. Smart Window conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default, and Mistral has agreed to zero data retention on its end. Both companies also describe themselves as open source advocates, which is worth noting given how much of the AI assistant landscape runs on closed, proprietary stacks. None of this tells us exactly what happens to the browsing content itself once it's been used to answer a query, but the stated terms on conversation storage and retention are the concrete commitments made public so far.
Where the beta is live now, and where it's headed
Mistral is currently powering Smart Window for users in France and North America, which is where the beta is actually running today. Support for the United Kingdom and Germany is expected later this year, extending the rollout beyond its initial footprint. For anyone outside those regions, the practical path forward is simply to wait for the announced expansion, since Mozilla and Mistral have only committed to those four regions so far. The staged rollout suggests a deliberate approach to scaling a feature that touches both browsing behavior and data handling, rather than a simultaneous global release.
